In most instances, slum dwellers do not own the land on which their structures are built, while in some instances, they may own such structures. Four broad categories of responses are envisaged when it comes to the tenure status of the dwelling unit in which the household lives:\n\n\n\n\u00b7\tFor dwelling units OWNED by the household: code '01' is used if the household PURCHASED it, '02' if it CONSTRUCTED it, and '03' if the dwelling unit is INHERITED. \n\n\u00b7\tFor dwelling units RENTED by the household: codes '04', '05', '06', '07', '08' are used if the dwelling unit is rented from an INDIVIDUAL, GOVERNMENT, LOCAL AUTHORITY, PARASTATAL, or a PRIVATE COMPANY respectively. \n\n\u00b7\tThe household may also be occupying a dwelling unit FREE OF CHARGE. For instance a relative may own the dwelling unit where the current household is staying (note that in this case the response is neither '01' nor '02' nor '03'). The household may also be staying free of charge in a structure owned by the government of Kenya (GoK) or any other agency.\n\n\u00b7\tFor cases where the respondent does not know, code 98 for 'Don't know\u201d is used. \n\n\u00b7\tIn case the tenure status of the dwelling unit cannot be classified under any of the above category, code '96' for OTHER is used, and the type of tenure is specified.\n\n\n\nPlease Note:\n\n\n\nPURCHASED: A member of the household has bought the structure or is currently paying for it in installments.\n\nCONSTRUCTED: A member of the household has built the dwelling unit or has paid somebody else to build it;\n\nINHERITED: A member of the household has acquired the dwelling unit, either legally or by a will. You should inquire about the circumstances of the inheritance; just accept the response given by the respondent.\n\n\n\nINDIVIDUAL: Private individuals.\n\nGOVERNMENT: Government of Kenya.\n\nLOCAL AUTHORITY: Municipal and Nairobi City Council.\n\nPARASTATAL: For instance Kenya Power and Lighting Co., Universities, Kenya Railways, etc\u2026\n\nOTHER: None of the above.
