The date of beginning (res_datebeg) for each individual's first residence episode is always their date of birth (that is, res_datebirth). For each of the individual's subsequent residency episodes, theres_datebegof the episode is the the same as the date that the preceding episode ended (that is, res_eventdate[_n-1]).
