Interviewer instructions
Column (32) is concerned with the current marital status of respondents who are 12 years or older. Thus, you should not record an answer in Column (32) if the respondent is 11 years or younger. The coding category 'married or living together' includes both respondents who are legally married and respondents in informal unions. An informal union is one in which the man and woman live together for some time, intending to have a lasting relationship, but do not have a formal civil, traditional or religious marriage ceremony. If someone reports they are 'single' you need to probe to make sure they are not cohabiting with a partner. Single should mean never married and never cohabited. Divorced persons have formally ended their union usually through legal or other processes. Separated persons have not formally ended their union while widowed persons have lost their spouse through death and have not remarried since.
