Questions and instructions

Sometimes a woman can have a problem such that she experiences a constant leakage of urine or stool from her vagina during the day and night. This problem usually occurs after a difficult childbirth, but may also occur after a sexual assault or after a pelvic surgery. Have you ever experience this problem?

Interviewer instructions
These questions are aimed at finding out if women have had a fistula- which causes the woman to lose control of her urine and fecal matter. This condition causes stigma and has led to the isolation of women even by her husband and close family. It is a condition that can be easily fixed through surgery yet due to its embarrassing nature, women suffer in silence. The questions first seek to establish under what circumstances the fistula developed and whether or not the woman has sought medical attention to repair the damage.
