RECORD AGE IN COMPLETED YEARS
Interviewer instructions
The age of all living children should be recorded in completed years.

Example: A child who will become three years old next month should be recorded as '02' years today. A child less than one year old will be recorded as age '00' years.

Sometimes, a mother will not know the current age of her child. In this case, you may rephrase the question to, “How many years ago was James born?” You can also use other available information such as checking the date of birth recorded in the immunization card (don't fail to confirm that the computed age agrees with the mother's account) or relating John's age to the age of a child she does know.

Example 1: The mother may know that her youngest child was born one year ago and that James was around two years old at that time, in which case James would be three years old now. You MUST record an age for all children who are still alive.

Example 2: You interview Juma's mother in June 2012 and she gives you the immunization card for Juma. From the card you see that he was born on May 20th 2008. You calculate the age and realize that Juma is now 3 years. You must ask the mother whether Juma is about three years old since errors have been seen in some immunization cards where dates are entered wrongly.

CONSISTENCY CHECK: DATE OF BIRTH AND AGE

You are not finished with Q. 217 until you have checked the consistency between Qs. 215 and

Q. 217. Check their consistency by using either the arithmetic or chart procedure:

Arithmetic procedure. Add the year of birth and the age. If the child has already had a birthday this year (month of birth is prior to month of interview), the sum should be 2012. If the child has not had a birthday yet this year (month of birth is after month of interview), the sum should be 2011. If the child's month of birth is the same as the month of interview, or if the month of birth is not known, the sum can be either 2011 or 2012.

Age/Birth Date Consistency Chart. Locate the age on the chart. Check that the birth year is consistent with that age in the chart. Use the right hand column if the month of birth is before the month of interview and the left hand column if the month of birth is after the month of interview. If the month of birth is the same as the interview or the month is not known, the year of birth must be the same as one of the two years of birth recorded in the chart. Both these procedures are explained in more detail after Qs. 106 and 107.

If year of birth date and age are not consistent, probe to get the correct information. Remember when probing, that either or both of the responses-age or birth date-may be wrong.
